It is important to remember the nature of sales. The primary thing is go connect with potential clients who need your services. When a potential buyer passes a home that looks interesting, it is in the best interest of that marketing agent to have the buyer call for information. In the end, it may also be the best opportunity for the buyer who could connect with someone who will help them find what they are looking for rather than driving all over, calling on homes that are appealing from the street but may be well out of their price range or in some other way unacceptable.
If price were the only factor in purchasing a home, it seems to me the low end of the market would be sold instantly. That is not the case. There is the buyer's dream list of must have criteria that is not visable from the street or even sometimes in viewing a list of room sizes and number of rooms. The internet is readily available to provide all the details of a home including a map and interior photos. Often a virtual tour provides additional information. Ultimately, however, the buyer needs to walk through not only the home that has caught their attention, but comparable homes to truly find not only the home that suits them, but to establish value in their own eyes.
Making that call to a Realtor who might be the very one who can guide you through the process is an excellent way to begin the search and successfully find your new home...price is not everything!

I believe that househunters (looking at newspaper ads and for sale signs) are first trying to ELIMINATE inventory on their way to a short list. Your new approach might help.
Also, having to answer a salesman's questions isn't much fun ... at first. We are conditioned to ward these off:
Clerk: May I help you?
Shopper: No, I'm just looking.
Once this "leave-me-alone" shell is penetrated, though, I agree with you that its really to the caller's best interests to share some information and take advantage of a good real estate agent's knowledge and feel for the market.
Total VALUE is more important than price alone.
